Nicotine patches and gum can gently wean your body from tobacco, while a skilled counselor or physician can reassure you while you quit. Even the telephone and internet can provide support in unexpected ways. Quitting isn’t easy, but it’s also not impossible. Three million Americans toss tobacco every year. Put the following tools in your bag and make this your year to quit for good!

Nicotine Patch
The nicotine patch minimizes withdrawal symptoms by gradually decreasing the amount of nicotine in your system. A new patch, which looks like a big bandage, is placed on the body and left on for no more than 24 hours at a time. Patch treatment usually lasts for at least 8 weeks. It is easy to use, can be purchased at most pharmacies, and has few side effects.

Nicotine Gum
Like the patch, the gum also slowly decreases the level of nicotine in your system. Chew one piece of gum every 2 hours. Leave the gum between your cheek and gum for 30 minutes so your body can absorb enough nicotine. The gum is a good option if you miss the feel of having a cigarette or chewing tobacco in your mouth. Gum treatments last for 3 months, and can be purchased at most pharmacies.

Zyban
Zyban is a prescription medication that for some people reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Researchers believe it alters chemicals in the brain that control nicotine addiction. You would begin the medication 2 weeks before your quit date. Zyban can be used safely with the patch or gum. It is very effective, but you must consult a doctor to see if it is right for you.

Talk Therapy
Quitting can be an emotional time. Talking with a counselor or with other people trying to quit can help ease tensions. Many hospitals have smoking support groups, and telephone counselors exist to help those unable to have face to face therapy.
